DARPADefense Advanced Research Projects Agency
We have information about two of the vehicles that compete. We chose these compounds because they represent both sides of the spectrum in terms of budget and resources. Each of the Hummer and F150 are the results of great effort and creativity, with the intention of participating in one of the greatest challenges.

DARPA conducted a challenge for land vehicles autonomy between Barstow, California. And Primm, Nevada. Was a cash prize of $ 1 million awarded to the team that fielded the first car to complete a specific path, but none went further than 7 miles. The purpose of the challenge to the influence of American ingenuity to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicle technologies that can be applied to military requirements. Our sources tell us that DARPA will try to challenge again. It appears that DARPA will be the biggest new challenge in the coming year with the largest cash prize of $ 2 million. We'll keep you posted, only an emergency you feel that you enter the truck to sit in the garage.
Barstow - was the starting line in the X pieces, the old farm converted into a restaurant and stood on the side of the road about 8 miles south of Barstow at 247. This is the kind of place that is still the "freedom fries" instead of French fries on the menu.
Results1. Team Red, 7.2 miles. The real story: taken from the hairpin turn a little wide and dropped two wheels off the right side (just on what appears to download, but it did not go on the edge of the abyss). Left wheels started spinning like crazy, and ripped tires at the end of the day apart. The smoke from the windows the appearance of fire, leading to a false report of fire from one helicopter. Although the DARPA spoken to the men who followed the vehicle and said pieces of melted rubber was thrown 80 feet in the air and was somewhat unpleasant.2. Sciautonics II, 6.5 miles, which swung on a high hill of 60 degrees.3. Group of digital driving, 6 miles away. I'm not sure what stopped them.4. Golem Group, 5.2 km, parked on a hill.
Able to lower the budget, an independent team is real, to overcome most of the big teams and the League sponsored by companies! Just the story of the underdog, if you ask me.Not Terramax 5, California Institute of Technology, and many others do not get more than about a mile away. We call on our vehicle, "Sandstorm". Transmit the name correctly aggressive personality of our car. We will be racing through the desert in surplus military HMMWV modified (high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles). Infact sand storm will kick up a lot of desert sand as it moves in the steel frame from Los Angeles to Las Vegas!
Our team is the "Red Team". For similar reasons, we felt that the Red is the color that best conveys a personal vehicle to our team. It is also a recognition of and respect for the gesture of appreciation to the leader of our team, and Dr. Whitaker, who is known to us all by his nickname "Red." We have heard that once the red-haired (and one can see countless all nighters building robots does not believe in the incredible lack of time will do to a man).
Sandstorm can say the car is the most advanced ground independent at all. It's quite an achievement when you consider that the average age of team members we have less than 25 years.
